Tourism for Tomorrow

Singapore

 Singapore

Overall:  Once you get over the jet lag and long flight, Singapore is enchanting. We found a diverse representation of Asian cultures, high service standards, excellent and reasonably priced food and shopping in a pleasant atmosphere.  It offers a prime point of departure to visit nearby attractions such as Bali, the Maldives, Thailand, etc.

There are some that feel that the island country is a bit too placid and boring. For others, the many restrictions designed to control a large population on a small island make it safer and more enjoyable to visit. The quality of life is high, though there are a number of laws that limit public and private behavior. Examples are bans on chewing gum in public and restrictions on eating "durian" fruits, which are quite nasty smelling. We found Singapore offers visitors the opportunity to experience different Asian cultures within one place in a clean, safe and reliable environment.

The Merlion is the symbol of Singapore - the Lion from the Sea

Location:  Asia, just south of Malaysia

Language:  English,

Currency:  Singapore dollars

Transportation: Planes, boats, and taxis

Cost of visiting:  Moderate to Expensive

Challenges:  Getting there can take a long time, especially if traveling from the U.S.   Though there are a good number of places to explore on the island, those who long to wander may feel restless.  Some claim Singapore is a sanitized miniature collage of its neighbors. It has a high density and the issues that it brings like traffic, a harried feel, pollution, etc.

Advantages: Singapore offers the advantages of many cultures within the space of an island, reasonable prices, and good service within a clean and safe environment. It is also near many exciting places. Visitors can use it as a launching pad to visit Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, etc.

Shopping: We found local and imported handcrafts, t-shirts, souvenirs, and jewelry.  Though prices can be higher than prices in some of its neighbor countries, it offers a more orderly, agreeable and safer shopping environment.
