Great Sleeps Paris

Great Sleeps Paris

Great Sleeps Paris book cover

Overall impression: Great Sleeps Paris provides the reader with a selective guide to accommodations in various categories, ranging from no-star to 3-star establishments. The author describes a no-star as a basic hotel with few, if any private bathrooms, no elevator and staff that speaks limited English. A one-star may offer minimum facilities but it is expected to be well located and clean. With two-stars one can expect direct dial-phones and elevators in buildings of four or more stories. Three stars indicate a more comfortable hotel with additional amenities.

The introductory sections include useful information on tours, as well as average temperatures in Paris during the year. The bulk of the book consists of the author’s review of various hotel establishments by quarter or arrondisement . For each hotel, the author includes the address, nearest metro station, the telephone and fax numbers, e-mail address and website, if available. The author also adds information about rates, breakfast prices, and whether English is spoken.

The review includes a description of the facilities and services provided by the hotel. It also includes the nearest tourist attractions. Besides all of that, I found the author’s reviews very interested. She makes an effort to convey the feel of the establishment and provides her impressions of what may be some of the rooms to ask for. The author covers other alternative accommodations, like apartments, bed and breakfasts and hostels. The book, which can fit in a large handbag or backpack, also has a section on shopping. I plan to use the book as a reference for alternative accommodations in future visits to Paris.
