Overall impression Great Eats Paris seeks to provide the reader with the inside track to some of the best dining deals in Paris based on the author’s research. The introductory sections provide some useful tips to the uninitiated. Tips range from the suggestion to go for lunch and order the fixed price menu as a money saving tactic to a description of the different types of eating establishments that one finds in Paris (e.g., cafés, bistros, wine bars, and restaurants). Another useful tip is the listing of the roving and organic markets and shopping streets. At the end the book, the author lists a glossary of French words and phrases and various indexes for easy reference.
The rest of the book consists of the author’s reviews of eating establishments by quarter or arrondisement . Each section is preceded by a map of the arrondisement showing the location of the various eateries. The book lists useful information about each establishment such as address, closest metro station, telephone, hours of operations, days closed, whether reservations are required, credit cards accepted, information about the fixed price and a la carte menus, as well as whether English is spoken. Prices are listed in euros. We also found useful the information about non-smoking areas. In her review the author provides a flavor of the place as she sees it, as well as, some of the dishes that may be of interest. Although the book has an Internet category, websites and email addresses appear for very few of the establishments.
Although the book can fit in a large handbag or backpack we chose to refer to it prior to going out and not to carry it with us. We found it to be a useful reference for alternatives to eating at the more traditional and well-known restaurants.
