Overall impression: Though the Cullinan Waterfront was not the most luxurious hotel in Cape Town, it is well placed for the business I was conducting in the City Center. It was a short walk down the waterfront to most of the business locations I needed to go to, and had a wonderful view of Table Mountain. They had excellent security staff with a visible presence all the way around the hotel, and helpful staff at the concierge desk. The view of the harbor was also excellent, the QE III showed up while I was there and it was visible from my window. The famous Cape Town W&A Waterfront was just a few blocks away and a cab ride to the table top mountain took 15 minutes. The service at the hotel was very good and the rooms comfortable and functional.

Location: City Center area of Cape Town

Year opened/renovated: N/A

Class of accommodation: Four Stars

Size: 416 rooms

Ease of reserving a room: Reserved by local agent

Check-in/check-out process ease: Easy mostly, although there was a bit of a line to get checked out in the morning.

Language: English and Afrikaans

Lobby and common areas: Pleasant and comfortable areas to meet and talk with visitors in the lobby. The decor was open and contemporary, with a lot of marble and pillars. It seemed to be crowded most of the time. They catered to tours and often had short-term guests.

Rooms: My room included standard hotel furnishings, with perhaps slightly nicer than normal taste in decor than one might expect. The view from my room was attractive.

Bathrooms: Modern and clean, with marble floors, tub and separate shower enclosure.

Cleanliness: Excellent

Amenities: In room tea and coffee and a safe. The front desk had power adapters, which were unwieldy to carry about. Bathroom amenities were adequate.

Facilities: The hotel had a pool, workout room with decent cardio equipment and weights, rental cars available and a small business center for faxing, email, etc. Also available were meeting rooms, conference rooms and a board room.

Pool and/or Beach: The outdoor pool was clean and pleasant though crowded. There were a fair number of children and guests present for the relatively small size.

Watersports: N/A

Spa: N/A

Restaurants: Breakfast service was outstanding, with a large buffet including full English breakfast, cereals, yogurts, fruit and great breads. This was served in a huge dining room that was typically full. There was also a cozy little pub downstairs (Kelsey's Grill) that served local beers and had pretty good food, fish and chips, snacks, etc.

Overall service: The quality of service was quite good, the staff friendly and helpful. On short notice, they arranged reservations at La colombe restaurant and transportation with driver. They also helped me find the nearest post office, supplies to wrap a package I was sending and power adapters for the slightly unusual South African power outlets.

Other: We needed a rental car for a day to go to the Cape. The concierge desk handled the arrangements. The car was waiting for us the next morning and we returned it that evening after a day of exploration. This handy service was convenient and meant not having to find transport to and from the rental car location.

There did appear to be a large number of tour groups coming and going at the hotel, so one day it was full and the next almost empty. It was a popular hotel and typically pretty busy at breakfast. In spite of this, the service was good and they maintained high quality throughout.
